Annual Docent Luncheon

On May 7, 124 people attended the Annual Docent Luncheon at the Honolulu Museum of Art Cafe. This is a photo of some of the docents who received the Docent Award Pin for giving at least 50 tours! Congratulations to these and ALL docents for a very successful year! Our visitors received over 3,200 hour of tours in 2011.

HAA Education Offices are now up on the second floor, overlooking the Banyanless courtyard, on the Mauka side of the building. Venture up the stairs and you can see Betsy through the window and Jan through the second window inside. Come up and see our new space. We can sit on the lanai and have a chat!

The exhibitions committee (this includes education) is reinstalling galleries 1-10 and 27! This is a work in progress, so please expect changes. Be flexible! :-)

Click on the Gallery and number to see the details; here are the highlights:

Gallery 1 will be on the theme of the Human Body - from the Egyptian and Cycladic figure to contemporary sculpture.

Gallery 2 - Italian and Northern Renaissance.

Gallery 3 - Baroque art.

Gallery 4 - Portraits - all kinds, all periods!

Gallery 5 - Rococo through Neoclassic.

Gallery 6 - Realism and Impressionism.

Gallery 7 & 8 - Early 20th century.

Gallery 10 will be for new small rotating exhibitions.

Gallery 27 - all contemporary art

Gallery 12 - closing, except for a small American section for our Colonial American tour.

Here is a quote from our new Director Stephan Jost regarding the merger:

There are so many things that are good about our partnership with TCM. We both get a chance to serve our public better, support all parts of our campus and create one collection. Of course the merger will change the Academy as much as it will change TCM. It will be judged as the right thing by history if we focus and serve our public. I know the frontline will set the right tone. At the end of the day this is not about the Academy or TCM but about the people who visit us. Other museums will merge in the next several years, I want us to be the case study of how to do it right!

All docents are asked to use locker #8 where you will find the schedule, routes, family passes and schedule. The front desk is small and crowded and we need to give them room to deal desk deal with the phone, visitors, and ticket sales.

All docents are invited to join the New Docents for the lectures in the Education Lecture Hall on Mondays.

Please welcome our NEW Japanese Speaking Docents who completed their zip training on December 14th! After they do a practice Walk-In Tour for each other, they will be leading tours for our visitors.

CAROL BONHAM'S PRESENTATION AT NATIONAL DOCENT SYMPOSIUM

Carol Bohham recently made a presentation at the National Docent Symposium in Toronto. The Symposium, titled "Crossing Borders, Bridging Cultures," was a huge success, in no small part to Carol's contribution. The program co-chairs said the following of Carol's presentation, "According to feedback, your presentation was extremely well received and generated much excitement among participants about the prospect of taking new ideas from your presentation and implementing them in their home institutions."

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION FORM

I would like to remind you that there is the Request for Information Form, which you can download from the "Procedures & Protocol" page, or you can get a hard copy in the docent room. This is the way to be sure your requests are answered. Use this form for questions, suggestions or complaints. Please send the form directly to me and if I cannot answer the question, I will forward it to the appropriate person. They may be anonymous or signed, but all will be answered and posted. This is the proper way to ask curators, administration questions. And it also REALLY helps me. Sometimes at docent meetings, more than ten of you will make a suggestion, and I can't remember it all.

HAA BAGS with materials needed for the tours: ANIMALS IN ART, TREASURES (Chinese landscape kit) and COLONIAL AMERICA (Mission cards for students) are on a lower book shelf in the Docent Library. The Lead Docent will pick up a bag and give it to the first Docent who will use it or place it in the gallery where it will be used. The bag will be left in that gallery for the next Docent to use. At the end of the tour, the Lead Docent will get the bag and return it to the same shelf in the Docent Room. Erin Boll will answer any questions you may have.
