ODIC

These four steps in viewing a work of art take time, but they allow visitors to gather observations so that they can actively join in the discussion.

a. Observe for a minute in silence

Before we begin our discussion, let’s take a minute to look closely….

b. Describe Have students/vistors look and describe: Elements (color, lines, forms, composition, material), Technique, Subject. The more they describe what they see, the more carefully and completely they are looking. "I see ......."

c. Interpret Have students consider the time, place, narrative, mood, intention, biographical, historical and social context "I think this.......... is what is going on because....of (give evidence) of what I see"

d. Connect to own lives to make relevant – personal life, emotional effect, cultural and world events or compare to another work of art.
