#1 rule - follow what your teacher says. If they want font size 12.5, give them font size 12.5.
Here's what I think:
Double spaced (every time you go to the next line a blank line will be in between)
Tab in paragraphs once
Font size 12, Sans-Serif
1" margins, or default
Single page reports should have the title and your name right under it, centered.
Multi-page reports should have a header with name and period and a footer with page numbers.
#2 rule - Don't spend more time on the cover page than the content... Content is King.
Reports checklist:
Is the report double spaced?
Are the paragraphs indented one tab?
If you used a title (which I recommend), is it centered, and in a bigger font?
Do you have (or need) a header and footer?
Have you performed a spellcheck?
Have you performed an eyeball test (print preview?)
Is the works cited page sorted alphabetically, single spaced, hanging indents, with a double space (blank line) between?
Is the works cited its own page?
When you give credit within the report, use parentheses (Stelter)... remember where there is a fact, there should almost always be credit given
Just because it's online..:
Jackalope (an animal)
Wholphins (dolphins and whales)
Lunar Landing Hoax
US Dollar coins to omit: In God We Trust
The infamous and much debated Liger - seen in the woods around Glen Falls
Save a new document as 'Report on anything I want'
Pick any topic you are interested in and compose a 2-3 page report on it. You have to be able to provide facts to support what you are writing about, and you must give credit (in the report and in a references page).
The first reports I gave to you and I was looking for simple formatting. For this report, I'll be looking specifically for the following:
Formatting (again!)
Opening paragraph with a hook of some sort
Body paragraphs with information, facts, opinions
Conclusion with 'wrap up' thoughts
References or works cited page formatted properly
Research Paper Introduction
Your introduction should contain a 'hook' - some fact or statement that makes me want to read more. Here are some examples:
In 2016, over 2,000,000 violent video games were sold in the United States. (SOURCE)
Over 3 billion people worldwide play the game of soccer. (SOURCE)
You should also start building a case for your paper. Take the 'hook', and use that to state your beliefs. Here is an example:
In the same year, there were over 200,000 reported violent crimes involving kids against kids. (SOURCE) I will prove that there is a direct relationship between violent video games and violent crimes in this country.
I like statements of opinion that are very clear. Example:
I believe that...
or
It is my opinion that...
Some professors do not want you to do that...make sure you know what they want specifically and follow their instructions. For this class, you can definitely use those kind of statements.
I do not have a set length for the introduction - write what you need to write. If you need some guidance, probably a half page or so is a good start.
Research Paper Body
The body of your research paper should contain all of your 'proof', opinions, statistics...anything to make me believe you. You have to sell what you are trying to prove.
Build your case.
Don't feel like you have to explain everything in the first body paragraph.
Use paragraphs to separate your arguments.
Keep reminding me throughout whenever you state a fact that this proves your argument.
Keep in mind that you must cite all of your work. The things that stand out the most are facts, quotes or statistics that are not given credit. Use the examples that we went over when discussing plagiarism. My rule is if you are not sure to cite, then you should cite.
Please, please, pretty please....proofread your work for spelling and grammar. You could have the best information and prove your idea completely, but if you have spelling and grammar mistakes, then your grade will suffer greatly. College professors have no patience for these kind of mistakes. They will deduct heavily from your grade...they figure (correctly) that at this point you should know better.
You may want someone else to read over your paper, and give you some tips.
Parenthetical Citation:
Within your paper... (author name)
If you don't know the author... (site name)
The conclusion of your paper...
Generally one paragraph
Restate your belief and tell me how you proved it...
i.e. - Based on the facts I presented, I believe that Elvis Presley is still alive.
Tie up any loose ends
Maybe leave the reader with a question, or something to ponder
i.e. - Now that I have proven Elvis Presley is alive, do you believe?
or - I believe that one day we will find Elvis Presley alive and well.
