To import animals from a non-commercial* source, investigators must:
submit the order in e-Sirius/Cayuse;
fill out the Import Request Form;
have the responsible veterinarian from the donor institution fill out the Import Health Survey for Mice & Rats.
Once the health status of the animals is reviewed and approved by the Clinical Veterinarian, shipment of the animals will be arranged.
* See the full list of approved commercial vendors here. Purchases from these sources do not need to go through the import process. Please request as standard order in Cayuse.
For additional instructions, please visit our e-Sirius training page.
All imports are required to be housed in quarantine for a minimum of 4 to 5 weeks. During quarantine, the animals are tested for a battery of rodent infectious agents. If testing results are negative for all infectious agents of concern, the animals are released from quarantine and transferred to one of the standard housing rooms.
All rodents prophylactically receive ivermectin-medicated drinking water for a minimum of 4 to 5 weeks or the duration of the quarantine period. Mice susceptible to toxicity are those with impaired blood-brain barriers or P glycoprotein knockout mice.
Access to quarantine is restricted. Please contact a member of the Veterinary team if you have questions.
For mouse imports, PCR samples are submitted to a diagnostic laboratory and screened for the following agents:
Mouse parvovirus (MVM, MPV), norovirus, Mouse coronavirus (MHV), mouse rotavirus (EDIM), mouse theilovirus (TMEV, GD-VII), adenovirus 1 and 2, reovirus types 1-4, pneomuovirus of mice (PVM), Sendai virus, ectromelia, LCMV, Helicobacter, Citrobacter rodentium, Mycoplasma pulmonis, Streptobacillus moniliformis, Pasteurella pneumotropica, Clostridium piliforme, Salmonella, Corynebacterium kutscheri, S. pneumoniae, beta-hemolytic Streptococcus A and B, fur mites, pinworms, Spironucleus muris, Cryptosporidium, Entamoeba.
To request the export of animals, investigators must complete a DCM Export Rodent Shipping form and submit it to the DCM main office. The Veterinarian team will contact the receiving institution and will provide the most recent health surveillance report including the last four quarters of test results and any other pertinent information. The export will be arranged if the results are acceptable to the receiving Clinical Veterinarian.
Fill out the Export Request for Mice and Rats.
Please note international requests require a longer processing time. GU labs are responsible for fees associated with an export (administrative time, supplies, etc.). Shipping fees can be billed directly to the receiving institution.
