Mentors Needed!

Columbia Junior High and Surprise Lake Middle School are excited to announce a partnership with the Tacoma-Pierce County Big Brothers Big Sisters program. We are aiming to offer both school and community based mentorship programs to help close achievement and opportunity gaps faced by our youth.

Our goal is to launch the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in our schools at of start of the 2019-20 school year, but we need your help to achieve this goal. In order to launch the program we will need a minimum of 20 volunteers that are able to dedicate 4 hours per month mentoring a student. Mentors will receive support and training throughout the mentorship process, and will be matched with their mentee based on a number of variables.

Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs have a measurable impact on the lives of our youth. In Pierce county alone students enrolled in the program showed an 86% improvement in academic achievement, 92% improved their sense of social acceptance, and 100% maintained risk free behavior (drug/alcohol abuse).

You can help us reach our goal of 20 volunteers in the following ways:

  1. Complete the Volunteer Interest Form
  2. Spread the word! If you know someone who would be a great mentor please refer them!
  3. Donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Online tutors are available from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. everyday (with the exception of holidays), for one-on-one homework help. The service is available in English or Spanish, for students of all ages. Online homework help requires a Pierce County library card.
