Canoeing
General Canoe Safety Rules
1) Always wear a PFD. Make sure it is properly done up and fits well. This is the most important rule.
2) Use common sense. This is the second most important rule. Remember that while the general rules listed below should be followed most of the time, there may be occasions where breaking these rules are the better option.
3) Stay with your swamped or tipped canoe (lake).
4) Don’t canoe in bad weather or at night.
5) Don’t attempt rapids which are above your ability (river).
6) Know what type of hazards are ahead of you. Never canoe a river you have no knowledge of. Watch for dead heads and sweepers!
Canoe Strokes
7) Don’t panic if you tip.
8) Head the bow of your canoe into the waves/rapids.
9) Kneel down in your canoe when the water gets rough.
10) If you tip, get upstream from your canoe. Hang onto your paddle. If you can, grab the painter of your canoe (river).
11) Get out of the water ASAP. Float on your back with your feet out in front of you. Remember to breathe (river)!
12) Never grab another canoe by the gunwale (the middle of the canoe) if you have fallen in. Grab by the bow or stern of the canoe if you must.
Group Safety Rules:
1) Stay with your group. Don’t go in front of the lead canoe or behind the sweep canoe.
2) 3 short blasts of the whistle mean that an emergency is at hand. Get off the river immediately and wait for directions.
3) Watch for, and follow all signals from the lead canoe.
Eddy: Basically just a calm spot in the river. Usually behind objects in the river or on bends. The Eddy line is just the visible line in the water where they can see the current change.
The quickest part of the river is the outside of the bend because the water has to to travel farther to get around.
