Hazard Identification, Assessment, and Control
Use the following information to help you prepare for the Unit 2 quiz. After you have read through the information complete the quiz for Unit 2.
Glossary:
Accident: event that results in injury, property damage, environmental damage, or loss of work process
Incident: situation that could have led to an accident (commonly referred to as a “near miss”
Hazard: circumstance or condition that could cause an accident or incident that results in damage, injury, or illness
Injury: bodily harm that could range from a minor cut finger to a major loss of limb or even loss of life (fatality)
Risk: chance of harm, damage, or loss
Three phases of dealing with hazards effectively:
Phase 1: Hazard Identification – locating hazards that could cause accidents in the workplace
Phase 2: Hazard Assessment – determining the degree of danger the hazards pose to workers (this is the risk factor)
Phase 3: Hazard Control – developing a plan to reduce or eliminate the identified hazards before they cause accidents
