Workplace Legislation & Goal Setting
Use the following information to help you prepare for the Unit 3 quiz. After you have read through the information complete the quiz for Unit 3.
Glossary:
Employer: person who employs one or more workers, or who is self-employed in an occupation
Worker: person engaged in an occupation
Occupation: employment, business, calling, or pursuit over which the Legislature has jurisdiction. There are three notable exceptions:
Farming or ranching operations
Work done in or around a private dwelling that is performed by an occupant or owner living in the dwelling, or a domestic worker of the occupant or owner
Workers in federally-regulated industries, such as banks and radio/television broadcasters
Worksite: location where a worker is engaged in an occupation and includes any vehicle or mobile equipment used by the worker in an occupation
Prime Contractor: employer who has overall responsibility to ensure compliance with the Act, Regulation, and Code.
Acts: establish legal authority, provide general principles, identify rights, and state responsibilities (e.g.: Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Act)
Regulations: set the rules supported by law, and establish safety requirements (e.g.: WHMIS – Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
Codes & Guidelines: provide outlines and details, specify testing procedures, and establish procedures for keeping records (e.g.: Employment Standards Code)
