Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Optics Design: In Progress
Fabricated adapter for newly purchased 20x eyepiece
Performed image testing of 25x eyepiece and high quality 10x Nikon eyepiece
TIRF Testing: In Progress
Continued performing tests to determine appropriate angle, distance, intensity configurations for optimum imaging performance
Spectroscopy: In Progress
Determine dimensions of apparatus
Began redesign of spectrophotometer using line CCD
Completed wiring of line CCD circuit
Program to read appropriate data off line CCD in progress
Sent inquiry to vendor that manufacturers spectrophotometer arduino shields
Assessing whether feasible within time frame of class (spectroscopy is secondary objective)
Electronics: In Progress
Possible electronics design:
Implementation of transistor design for switching between stepper motor
Implementation of multiplexer for switching between stepper motor
Mechanical: In Progress
Fabrication of higher precision CMOS plate complete
Testing:
Implementation of compression springs to keep lead screw engaged
Performed risk reduction test of slide tray design
Software: In Progress
Photomontaging Code in development
Updated Graphical User Interface (GUI) for Mac OS complete

Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Presentation Comments from 5/10/12:
Good hardware progress
Good presentation
To reduce vibrations consider ramping up speed and ramping down
Consider delrin or other plastic for fabrication of linear actuator
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Presentation Comments from 5/10/12:
User Interface Suggestions
Buttons move the motor when momentarily pressed rather than on/off motor controls
Mechanical Suggestions
High friction setup so that kinetic and static friction are almost equivalent = no jump as you overcome static friction
Pads at the base of microscope to reduce vibrations
No lash flanges for lead screw to help with backlash
Risks and Areas of Concern
Properly reading data of line CCD (for spectrophotometer)
TIRF Lighting Issues
Requires more testing
Optical alignment
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Spectrophotometer Arduino shield
Sent purchase inquiry to vendor
5MP USB CMOS Sensor
Awaiting response from vendor
Schedule
Completion of 3rd Microscope Prototype
Completion of TIRF and Spectroscopy Testing
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
Amount Spent: $988.02
Amount Remaining: $511.98
