Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Optics Design: In Progress
Performed initial tests with 60x objective, 15x eyepiece and new 2MP USB enabled CMOS
Captured images that were satisfactory to sponsor
Possible implementation of 20x eyepiece for improved magnification and image clarity (brand new, clean optics)
TIRF Testing: In Progress
Began imaging tests using new CMOS sensor
Began performing tests to determine appropriate angle, distance, intensity configurations for optimum imaging performance
Spectroscopy: On Hold
Determine dimensions of apparatus
Possible redesign using line CCD
Assessing whether feasible within time frame of class (spectroscopy is secondary objective)
Electronics: In Progress
Completed wiring and implementation of 2MP USB enabled CMOS
Possible electronics design:
Implementation of transistor design for switching between stepper motor
Implementation of multiplexer for switching between stepper motor
Mechanical: In Progress
Fabrication of new XYZ translation design completed
Testing:
Implementation of compression springs to keep lead screw engaged
Software: In Progress
Photomontaging Code in development
Graphical User Interface (GUI) for Mac OS complete
Graphical User Interface (GUI) for iPad application in development
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Completed fabrication of updated XYZ translation design
Completed development of XYZ microscope control Graphical User Interface (GUI) on Mac OS
Successfully connected GUI to stepper motor operation via serial communication from laptop computer to Arduino
Completed wiring and operational tests of new USB-enabled CMOS module
Successfully operated microscope prototype via laptop computer (XYZ control of microscope motion via GUI, live video feed and image capture on laptop)
Successfully imaged Blood Smear samples with Brightfield Microscopy and images were approved by two Medical Doctors
Completed initial tests for Fluoroscopy (TIRF)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Reprogram GUI to include options to include speed and delay controls: stepper motor delay time and micro-stepping (Sean)
Finish assembly of Objective Rotation Mechanism (Leonardo)
Continue TIRF Testing (Reggie, Kyle)
Determine Spectroscopy Design (Sean, Leonardo)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Comments from 5/8/12 Meeting:
Likes the images taken by our microscope (blood cells)
Sponsor will purchase a 20x eyepiece for possible improvement in optics (current eyepiece has surface scratches which degrade quality)
Extremely happy about the "new interaction" as a result of the microscope - no eyepiece, fully automated via computer control, live video feed from computer screen
"You have achieved or overachieved the requirements for this project"
Possible use of S-mount objective lenses - Sponsor is in contact with manufacturer
