Nutrition Services Kitchen Volunteers Needed!
Nutrition Services is in need of parent volunteers to help us feed all of our students and staff! Please send out this link and encourage your parent community to help out. Once the form is filled out, we will get them background checked and working in our kitchens when they are available.
Special Diets and 504 plans
When a student receives a 504 plan that includes dietary modifications or special diet needs, please make sure the parent knows they need to contact Tara Gonzales (Nutrition Services RD) at tara.gonzales@dcsdk12.org to begin the process of receiving these meals. There is additional communication required beyond the 504 plan before these are available to them. We do not receive 504 information and do not have these meals available on a daily basis without prior knowledge. This process can take up to 3 weeks at the start of the school year.
Reminder - Nutrition Services Free Staff Meals Guidance
Nutrition Services is pleased to begin offering Free Staff Lunches this school year. To help answer some questions that have come up, please share these documents with your staff so they have an idea of what to expect and how to get their free lunches Elementary, Middle, High School, and Departments. We are also asking if all School Staff could let their kitchen staff know each morning if they plan to eat via this Staff Lunch Form. You are not pre-ordering, you are just giving a helpful headcount to your staff to ensure enough food is available. Please share that link with your school staff.
Free Meals for All!
We know there are many questions regarding the passage of the Healthy School Meals for All program (Proposition FF) in Colorado.
Douglas County School District RE-1 opted into the Healthy School Meals for All program for the school year 2023-24. Starting July 1, 2023, all students will have access to reimbursable meals at their school at no cost. A la carte purchases will continue to be offered for a fee. These purchases will be charged to the student’s meal account if they have money in their account, or the student may pay for the food items with cash. We anticipate an increase in participation next school year. To ensure meal service runs efficiently, our focus is to: Ensure our kitchen sites are adequately staffed. Make sure lunch lines move smoothly.
Do parents need to fill out a Free and Reduced Application? YES! While all Meals are now free, we still highly encourage families to complete a Free and Reduced Application. The outcome of the applications is directly tied to District funding.
The 2023-2024 Free and Reduced Meal Benefits information is available on the DCSD Nutrition Services website under the Free & Reduced tab. There is a link to the online application, and a link to Letter to Households, paper application, instructions, and the consent to share forms. These are supplied in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian. Some translations are in process and will be posted soon.
Also, we have a wonderful flyer that explains why parents should apply for meal benefits. This flyer is supplied and English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian as well. Please feel free to post these at your school site so that parents are aware of the program. This flyer is on the home page, please scroll down.
Please destroy all old paper applications, as I am not able to accept them. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Susan Babineau at Susan.Babineau@dcsdk12.org or 303-387-0368.

EXCITING NEWS: As many of you have read in the news, the USDA made the surprise announcement on Monday 8/31 to reverse a prior decision and make ALL meals free to any kid 18 years of age and under until December 31, 2020 or when funding runs out. Effective immediately, students at all schools serviced by Nutrition Services that operate the National School Lunch Program or the Special Milk Program will have access to healthy and FREE meals every day. This will be in place for eLearners as well as in person learners and their siblings. Nutrition Services is ecstatic with the news and working quickly to be ready to handle the expected increase in volume for in person meals AND remote meal bags. We will begin messaging this out more widely once our plans are fully in place. In the meantime, no reimbursable meals will be charged to student accounts. Ala carte items will continue to be sold at all levels. Nutrition Services will also be hiring at all levels!
