A Summer Trip
Your family is going on a two-week trip. The first place you’re going is to Ohio to see grandma and grandpa. Then it’s off to Orlando, Florida where you will visit Disney World and Universal Studios. Finally you will drive back to Charlton.
During this exercise, you will be using Google Earth to determine how many miles each leg of your journey will be and how long it will take you to get there.
To complete this exercise, you will need a trip log (provided) and a computer with Google Earth installed. You may also use the computer calculator (Start-All Programs-Accessories) for your calculations.
Instructions:
1. Place the name of you and your partner on the worksheet.
2. Get into Google Earth.
3. Click on the ruler at the top of the screen. The ruler dialog box will display.
4. Click the Path tab.
5. In the search box, type “Charlton, MA” and enter.
6. Left mouse click on Charlton. A small blue box should appear.
7. In the search box, type Columbus, OH and enter.
8. Left mouse click on Columbus. You should now see a yellow line extending to Columbus and you will see the length in miles change. Write down on your worksheet how many miles this first “leg” of your journey has been.
9. In the search box, type in Orlando, FL. Place your mouse over Orlando and click. You will get another yellow line. This is your total miles, you will now have to calculate and write down how many miles you’ve driven from Columbus to Orlando. Subtract the Charlton to Columbus mileage from this number.
10. Finally, type into the search box “Charlton, MA”. Again, calculate the miles from Orlando to Charlton.
11. At this point, you can follow the instructions on the worksheet.
