988 and Behavior Crisis Support

What is 988?

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.

What do 9-1-1 centers need to know about 988?

9-1-1 centers should have policies and protocols regarding how and when to transfer callers to 988 when it is appropriate, and how to receive callers transferred to 9-1-1 from 988. In some cases, these policies and protocols may also guide the use of mobile crisis response resources.
