What is a Field Journal?

Scientists use field journals to record what they find, observe, and collect. They often include sketches, diagrams, observations, and questions. A field journal helps you remember details and identify patterns over time. There are many ways to keep a field journal.

KEYSTONE SPECIES SYMBIOSIS

Explain with both pictures and words how keystone species in our local environment impact each other. Be sure your diagram includes at least 3 different species. Use arrows and your page layout to help emphasize your message.

  • Illustrate an anatomical breakdown of a species.

  • Illustrate a symbiotic relationship that supports each other with information for both species.

PLANT/ANIMAL + ENVIRONMENT

Illustrate a plant or animal from our local environment. Then add notes and labels to explain at least 3 different parts of the images.

Level 2: Illustrate an indigenous species engaged in its environment.

Using a simple background, illustrate a plant or animal from our local environment. Include at least 5 labels to describe parts of or facts about your species.

Level 1: Compose an illustration that shows a minimum of 5 characteristics of an indigenous species.
