I think that all educators would agree that having a fluid and adaptive curriculum is necessary to prepare students for a career in the 21st century. The job market is constantly changing and so must education. One of the biggest driving forces behind change is technology. Because of the rapid growth in technology, there are literally thousands of new careers that did not even exist a decade ago. As I consider the courses that I teach at Cambria Heights, and I evaluate their relevance to the job market, I see a “gap in services” when it comes to preparing students for the numerous technology driven careers that now exist in the arts. Until the last few years, the equipment necessary to teach a practical course in these fields would have been extremely expensive to implement, but what once took an entire studio full of priceless equipment to accomplish can now be done on a basic desktop, laptop, or even iPad. Many other school districts have seen the demand for these types of careers and have added audio and visual technology courses like the one I am proposing. I am hoping that we can do the same.
