MEMORANDUM FOR AFJROTC PARENTS/GUARDIANS

SUBJECT:  AFJROTC Welcoming Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian

Congratulations!  Your son/daughter has been accepted into the United States Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFJROTC) Program - Unit IA-951.  This program offers opportunities in leadership, aerospace education, community service, and social activities.

Citizenship.  We stand committed to the AFJROTC goal – “To Help Build Better Citizens for America”.  AFJROTC does this by exposing Cadets to the highest standards of discipline, respect, initiative, pride, responsibility, personal appearance, and academic excellence.

No military commitment. AFJROTC is funded by the United States Air Force and is also a Congressionally approved program designed to help high school students with their life choices.  AFJTOTC has no military commitment and AFJROTC Instructors are not recruiters.

Uniform wear and care.  The cadets earn the privilege of wearing the AFJROTC uniform. Cadets will be issued uniforms at no cost and will be required to wear them on all-day Tuesdays. Cadets are expected to dress out for PE and cannot use the uniform day as an excuse not to.  Classes in which additional protection is needed to protect clothing will have smocks and aprons available.  During inclement weather, cadets are encouraged to wear the necessary outer gear (coats and jackets) to school over their uniform.  Coats and jackets must be stored in the student lockers upon arrival at school.  The cadets are responsible for uniform cleaning (dry cleaning for coats and pants, home washer and dryer, and iron for the shirts) as well as their personal appearance (cleanliness, haircuts, clean-shaven, etc.).   If a uniform is lost or damaged, the cadet/parent is held liable for replacement.

Physical training (PT).  On Fridays, the class participates in PT. Let us know if your student has a condition that would prevent them from fully participating in running and other basic exercises. A permission form will be sent home; please sign and return it with your student.  If your cadet does not have an issued PT uniform from last year, they will be issued one at no cost. Until issue, cadets need to wear appropriate exercise clothes on Fridays.

TJ.Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln cadets continued to work well together. The experience has been and continues to be fantastic and we anticipate great things this year. Drill practices will be before school at ALHS in an effort to develop a well-synchronized team.

Activities/Booster Club.  Each year the corps participates in numerous events throughout the Midwest. Some of these trips are for the entire corps. Other events are for cadets who have competed for positions on various teams and are traveling to compete against other units. The Booster Club does a great job of supporting these efforts both physically and financially. Parents, please consider becoming a member of our Booster Club. The Booster Club president this year is Mrs. Tiffany Merit. We plan to hold monthly meetings at AL.

Contact information.  This year we currently have 82 cadets between the two schools.  Feel free to contact us at (712) 328-6481 with any questions or concerns you may have.  Finally, you are always welcome in our classroom to observe class or discuss any issues.

Sincerely,
