For externally assessed NCEA examinations where a student is unable to attend or has impaired performance, Derived Grades may be applied for.
Derived Grades are only allocated when a student has met the guidelines set out by NZQA and the school has pre-existing, valid, standard-specific evidence which meets the requirements of the standard. In general, derived grades are taken from the school examinations.
For more information on Derived Grades, you can read Information for Candidates here.
A medical certificate must be supplied and section B of the Derived Grade application must be completed by a registered health professional. If the absent is not due to medical reason, please contact the Assessment Office to discuss. Once you have completed your form, please submit the form to the Assessment Office before the close off date.
If you have any questions on Derived Grades, wish to discuss an application or submit an application, please come to the Assessment Office in C Block or email assessment@burnside.school.nz
Application for Derived Grades must be returned to the Assessment Office by:
Prior to exams starting for Portfolio submission subjects - Design and Visual Communication, Technology, Level 3 Education for Sustainability or Level 3 Visual Arts
No later than 2 weeks after your last external exam for standards assessed in NZQA external examination sessions. Check the examination timetable.
Derived Grades for National Representation
If you have been selected for national representation in a sport or approved activity and that event will occur during NCEA examinations, you can also apply for a Derived Grade. This must be pre-approved by NZQA. For this, you must complete a Pre-Approval for a Derived Grade for National Representation Form (download from here). This must be submitted back to the Assessment Office by at least one week before exams start.
