End of Year Updates

Message from the Principal

Dear Students and Families,

Happy Summer!  You made it!  Three months ago when we left 1100 Fulton Street on Friday, March 12th, I had no idea that would be the last time we’d see each other this year.  Since then, you have learned, on the spot, to be a completely different kind of student in a completely different kind of school.  It has had its challenges, I am sure, but you adapted and persisted, and you should feel proud of all the work you have done.

In these past few weeks, we have also seen the horrific murders of multiple Black men and women at the hands of law enforcement around the country, as well as the resulting protests that have mobilized people around the world to say that Black Lives Matter and demand change from the institutions that have not served our Black citizens.  Many of you have participated in protest marches and have engaged in related dialogue through Padlets or other class discussions. Our last day of school this past Friday fell on Juneteenth, a celebratory day commemorating the end of slavery and freedom for Black Americans, and we hope you continue to learn about historical events like these that has been missing from our history books.  You can start right here by viewing this video on an infographics channel called “Inspired Learning” by our very own Mr. Sanders.  Thank you Mr. Sanders for creating and sharing!

The end of every school year is also a time for goodbyes.  This year, we had to virtually say goodbye to all our 8th graders, who will be moving on to high school (see recording of CHMS Moving Up Ceremony here).  We know you will all do great things next year and beyond.  There are also some of our faculty and staff who will be moving out of the city, out of the state, changing careers, or switching schools.  This year we say goodbye to Mr. Adme, Ms. Barr, Ms. Kin, Ms. Li, Ms. Luther, Ms. Siby, Ms. Sugar, Ms. Sylvestre, Mr. Valencia and Ms. Weaver.  We are so grateful to have gotten to know and work with you and wish you all the best in your new roles.

I know there are still uncertainties about what the fall will look like, but once we have a better idea, we will be sure to let you know.  I hope you all have a wonderful summer, filled with rest, relaxation, family, reflection, fun, and whatever else you may need or want.  See below for a list of summer resources compiled by our YDSC team as well as information on our summer school and our recommended summer work.  Many of us will be working through the summer, so if you need anything, please do not hesitate to contact CHMScoordinator@brooklynprospect.org.

 Sincerely,

Mr. Ellis

Black Lives Matter Dance Protest

Join our After School Dance Teacher Mr. Kam and After School Program Coordinator Ms. Amanda in using dance as a form of protest. Students and families are invited to learn and record themselves performing Mr. Kam’s choreography to “Freedom” by Beyoncé. All black clothing preferred! The routine can be found under Performing Arts on our ASP Remote Enrichment webpage . Please send all videos to Ms. Amanda at abyam@brooklynprospect.org.

Let's Be Together

There has been so much going on, and we feel it, too. The inequality around COVID-19, the murder of black people across the US - Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and so many others - and police brutality in our city and nationwide. We are offering some time & (virtual) space to be together in the various ways we might need at this time. All while figuring out remote learning! It has been a lot and has affected everyone in our community in different & deep ways. Let’s be together to talk about protesting. Let’s be together to draw. Let’s be together to share our favorite poem. Let’s be together to take action. Let’s be together to breathe & meditate. Let’s be together to do whatever you may need.

We want to give you a chance to voice your needs and concerns. This optional time is during the last week of school together--on June 16 and June 17 (Tues & Weds) from 12-1.

Spring Grading Update

May 19, 2020

Dear Families,

We hope you and your families are all doing well and staying safe.  As we continue through this global crisis, we thank you all again for your patience as we work through what remote learning will look like.  We wanted to share an update on how we will be determining grades for the Spring semester.  Both Brooklyn Prospect middle schools aligned on this decision so that each school will be moving forward in the same way.

Some guiding principles we kept in mind while making this decision were:

With that, we are going to align with the NYC Department of Education and instead of giving traditional grades on report cards, we will report different categories, based on the following criteria:

Students who currently have an overall grade of 65 or under will be able to make up old achievement assignments to help boost that grade.

We are so proud of all the hard work that all our students have been putting in during this time and are confident that the work you have been doing is meaningful and worthwhile of all our time.  We also fully recognize that so many of you, families and students, have been under an enormous level of stress and dealing with varying levels of anxiety.  It is sometimes okay to prioritize family and mental health over making sure every single assignment is completed to perfection.

May 15, 2020

Whole School

Our students have raised concerns about recent injustices, from the brutal killings of innocent black men and women, to COVID-19, highlighting the effects of systemic racism in our country. We are feeling the loss of community as we are working remotely, but we don’t want to lose our sense of community while we are apart. Tying in to the work that we did around Black Lives Matter Week of Action in February, we will be sharing resources with families and opening up optional student circles to process, converse, and support one another during this difficult time. If you are interested in getting involved, please reach out to Anne Weaver (aweaver@brooklynprospect.org).

Sip & Support with Ms. Weaver

Hello Families - thanks for your participation in Sip and Support during this remote learning time!

It has been great connecting with you all via zoom or email as we go through this process together!

Our last session will be on June 3 at 5pm.  More details to follow, but if you need any support before then, reach out aweaver@brooklynprospect.org

Take Action to Fund NY Schools!

Please take action and tell your elected officials that you support more federal funding for NY students and schools. Your response will make a difference.

This week, Governor Cuomo reiterated the need for $60 billion in federal aid to mitigate the financial impact of the current crisis. Without that aid, public schools like ours will pay a further price. Prospect Schools supports Governor Cuomo’s call for federal aid and urges our community to support a federally funded package that provides the necessary funds to stabilize state budgets.

As a community, we must stand together and tell our elected officials that New York's children cannot, and should not, bear the burden of this crisis. Perhaps now more than ever, our students need the safety and support of fully funded schools.

Live Learning Update

Live learning is starting in a week!  Beginning May 5th, we will be incorporating live class sessions as an opportunity for our students to connect with their classmates, learn from each other, receive real time feedback from teachers, and increase their connection to the school community.  This week, we will email individualized schedules to students so they know what days/times they should log on and what zoom link to use.   You can expect that your child will need to attend one 45 minute class at either 10:00am or 11:00am every day from Tuesday through Friday, and one afternoon class at either 1:00 or 2:00 most days.  Many teachers will be using Nearpod as a tool to have students engage with each other and their material.

We are looking forward to this last shift in how our remote learning will look.  Our teachers are working hard and passionately for the good of our students, but this is new for all of us, so thank you in advance as we work through some hiccups that may arise we get started with this new format!

Attendance During Remote Learning

Currently, student attendance is being tracked using assignment completion.   Every 3 missed assignments for a given week, equates to one absence. Once we begin live sessions, a combination of live session attendance along with missed assignments will be input into TeacherEase.  Please keep in mind that we are only using the attendance metric to help us measure engagement during this time. Additionally, as a reminder, New York City has noted that 7th grade attendance will not be used for next year's high school placement process. Family Update

March 22, 2020

Dear CHMS Families,

Ahead of our second week of remote learning, there have been a few operational updates from Brooklyn Prospect and the NYC Department of Education.  While we continue to monitor the situation and new resources become available, we’ll update links on our CHMS website and share out communication.

Google Classroom Tech Issues

Brooklyn Prospect is now offering a hotline (718-643-1086 x4957) for any tech issues your student may be experiencing on Google Classrooms between 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.  For any content specific questions, students should continue to attend office hours in Zoom Rooms. Links to Zoom Rooms can be found on Grade Level Overview pages on our website. See here.

Additionally, if your student has limited or no access to a device or wifi to complete their work, please reach out to Courtney Sakamoto (csakamoto@brooklynprospect.org).

Food Distribution for Students

Starting on Monday March 23rd, grab and go meals will only be available at 439 sites. Find the list of sites here. Please note that these sites may change over time. We will notify you if there are any changes. See other relevant information below:

Regional Recreation Centers

In order to successfully fight COVID-19, our city’s first responders, health care providers, transit workers, and other key personnel must be able to come to work. Regional Enrichment Centers (RECs) have been created for the children of these front-line workers.  At the RECs, these children can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need. The centers will provide children with three hot meals daily, remote learning time with teachers, activities like art and music, and social and emotional support. Regional Enrichment Centers will be available citywide. For more information and to see if your family is eligible, see here.

Suspension of Intermediate-Level State Assessments for the Remainder of the School Year

Due to statewide closures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the following state exams have been suspended for the school year. At this time, NYSED is continuing to closely monitor the situation and will provide guidance on the Regents examinations in the near future.

If you have any questions, please reach out to our Program Office at chmscoordinator@brooklynprospect.org

Dear Clinton Hill Families,

It has been a joy to welcome students back to the building this week! Our newest students are settling in the routines of middle school life and our sixth and seventh graders have returned from their summer vacations more confident, focused, and definitely taller.

While we always take time to practice routines and procedures in every classroom during the first days of school, our students have also been jumping right into the academic work of their classes. They are exploring properties of magnetism, discussing relative values using intersecting axies, reading novels, and setting goals for the year ahead!

We’re excited for all that the year holds in store for our young students. Welcome back everyone!

General Announcement:  8th Graders are required to have 3 binders this year, as they are required for Science, Math, and Humanities.  We apologize for the miscommunication in the supply list. Lightly used binders may be available for reuse- please tell your student to ask Ms. Richardson if they would like one!

Humanities: Students will be quickly reviewing the Civil War before analyzing the successes and failures of post-war Reconstruction. Students will have a Civil War review quiz on 9/11-9/12. Students will have a second quiz on Reconstruction on 9/25-9/26. In between these assessments students will deepen their content knowledge by participating in a simulation, Socratic Seminar and several discussion jigsaws. We encourage caregivers to ask their 8th grade student(s) about their understanding of this time period and how it still affects us today!

7th Grade

7th Grade Major Projects & Academic Updates

Advisory: 7th grade students have spent time in advisory this week learning about Brooklyn Prospect’s core values and mission statement. They have applied these ideas to their own lives, and worked to identify their own personal core values and draft a mission statement for their lives. This week, 7th graders will read over updates to our grading policies, and set academic goals for the year.

ELA: Next week in ELA, students will begin reading The Giver by Lois Lowry! If students would like to read along with the audio while completing their reading homework, you can find it here: bit.ly/audioELA. After reading The Giver, and other examples of science fiction, students will demonstrate their understanding of literary devices and author’s craft by writing their very own science fiction short story.

6th Grade

6th Grade Major Projects & Academic Updates

This week, they will receive their lockers and practice how to use them with speed.
