K-5 curriculum exposes students to the basic skills for physical and social activities for outside of the school day and later in life. Students practice skills in small groups, teams, stations and lead up games. Exposure to the skills is the key, rather than learning the detailed rules to specific sports.
The Anchorage School District provides an outline for the year for skills to be introduced. Individual PE teachers have the ability to select how those skills are delivered. Some skills may overlap or move to different quarters based on student readiness, weather, equipment availability, etc.
These units may vary from year to year. We have a climbing wall which provides our school to include this in the curriculum on a yearly basis. Other units may include, circus arts, biking, ninja course, golf, speed stacking, etc. Parents are welcome to join into the curriculum to offer their expertise as well.
