Homestead Elementary will be hosting a 3 vs 3 basketball jamboree. Elementary students from the Eagle River area are invited to participate and represent their schools in non-competitive 1/2 court basketball games. General rules are available at the bottom of this page.
Expect students of all abilities to be participating in about five games about 10 minutes long. This is not a tournament. Teams will simply be assigned to play some other schools... maybe even one from their own school!
Available in media rack or from your PE teacher
If ASD cancels school and/or afterschool activities for any reason, the jamboree will also be cancelled.
Questions? contact: olson_kirk@asdk12.org
Students will self select (organize) their own teams. If a student would like to participate, but has no team, Mr. Olson or Mrs.Senn will assist with team placement.
Although 3 players will be one the court playing, the typical team should have 4 or 5 members (in case of a no show, injury, fatigue etc.)
Teams can be made up of-
All boys, all girls or mixed
3 to 5 players
Mr. Olson will not be available to coach each team at the jamboree as there will be multiple Birchwood teams. Players should show up 15 min before their jamboree and be expected to "coach" themselves. Parents are welcome to assist teams in helpful ways, but the idea is the kids learn to organize and practice being good citizens in a sports environment. Other schools may have designated coaches.
Players will be issued a school jersey that will be returned to school. The jersey is reversible to be white or red.
WATER BOTTLE!
GYM SHOES- Students may need to bring them home from school.
Teams and players will have two opportunities during recess to learn the 3 on 3 half-court rules, play together, scrimmage other teams. We will also review how to take turns playing, assign captains, how to act (sportsmanship).
RECESS PRACTICE for all participating grades 3-5, will be led by Mrs. Senn and Mr. Olson
All students would eat lunch before practice.
"I Want to Play" registration forms have been sent home with interested students
3 vs 3 Basketball Rules
Running clock, half court or quarter court
Checking the Ball (Ball size 5=27.5 which is the size below a women’s ball)
-Can dribble off top and score without passing, but after two straight dribbles and score by one person then the team must start to rotate the top person so one person doesn’t do it all.
-Checking after any dead ball: out of bounds, score, foul
-Must be at least an arm’s length away when giving ball to player
Clearing the Ball
-After a loose ball or rebound the ball must be dribbled or passed back to the checking point (line or cone) to clear the change of possession. Both feet must cross checking point
Defense
-Must stay with a person they are guarding.
-No stealing from dribblers unless they lose control.
Fouls
-Foul on shot is a point if missed, no free throws, two points if made (one for basket and one for foul)
Traveling
-Warning to player, but no stoppage of play unless:
1) Allows a score to happen (can’t walk by a defender to score)
2) No effort to dribble and just walks
Loose Ball
-”Tie” or “Jump Ball” goes to defense
