Arlington Reads Together

posted Feb 25, 2019, 1:38 PM by Stacy Kitsis [ updated Feb 25, 2019, 1:40 PM ]

March is the month of Arlington Reads Together at Robbins Library, when the town comes together to read and discuss one book as a community. This year we are reading the young adult novel REFUGEE by Alan Gratz. Throughout the month of March the library will be hosting programs and conversations on issues surrounding refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants, and displaced people. Read more about the book and upcoming events on the library's blog or download a PDF of the ART Events and Discussions brochure for ALL the details.

It's a quick and engaging read and we have copies available in the AHS Media Center for anyone who is interested in participating. We are also discussing this book at the Intergenerational Book Club on Thursday, February 28, after school in the library. All are welcome!

From the author's website:

Three different kids.

One mission in common: ESCAPE.

Josef is a Jewish boy in 1930s Nazi Germany. With the threat of concentration camps looming, he and his family board a ship bound for the other side of the world…

Isabel is a Cuban girl in 1994. With riots and unrest plaguing her country, she and her family set out on a raft, hoping to find safety and freedom in America…

Mahmoud is a Syrian boy in 2015. With his homeland torn apart by violence and destruction, he and his family begin a long trek toward Europe…

All three young people will go on harrowing journeys in search of refuge. All will face unimaginable dangers–from drownings to bombings to betrayals. But for each of them, there is always the hope of tomorrow. And although Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud are separated by continents and decades, surprising connections will tie their stories together in the end.

Tickets are on sale now to see Laurie Halse Anderson at the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square, sponsored by the Harvard Book Store. The event is on Wed. March 13.

From the website: "Harvard Book Store welcomes LAURIE HALSE ANDERSON, the award-winning, bestselling author of Speak, for a discussion of her new memoir, SHOUT—a searing poetic memoir for the #MeToo era. Anderson will be joined in conversation by a special guest, to be announced." Oooh, mysterious! We can hardly wait.

Happy Public Domain Day!

posted Jan 9, 2019, 8:51 AM by Stacy Kitsis [ updated Jan 9, 2019, 8:53 AM ]

For the first time in 21 years, new copyrighted works entered the public domain in the United States on January 1, 2019, an event fondly known (well, to some) as Public Domain Day. HAPPY PUBLIC DOMAIN DAY!

Check out this article in Smithsonian Magazine for more about the fascinating history of copyright in the United States (you can blame Mickey Mouse) and what works are now available for your copyright-free use. Spoiler alert, they include the poem “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening” and the 1920s hit song, “Yes! We Have No Bananas” which your loyal librarian first learned while taking ballroom dance lessons during study abroad in Estonia in her golden days of youth. Because why not?
