GMO Discussion
GMO Structured Controversy
LT 5.5 I can evaluate how the third Agricultural revolution (the Green Revolution) is affecting food systems, animals, and the choices we have about the food we eat.
Purpose: To broaden your understanding of the food system you are a part of. To help you understand that your food is deliberately created. To help you work collaboratively, problem-solve, and discuss a problem constructively.
Steps:
- You will work in groups of 4.
- 2 people will be pro-GMO
- 2 people will be anti-GMO
- In your group of 2, you will be researching your side of the argument.
- Pro-GMO: the benefits of genetically modified foods outweigh the harms
- Anti-GMO: the harms and unknowns of genetically modified foods outweigh the benefits
- Use reputable sources to find information about your side of the argument.
- You need 3 different arguments.
- All arguments need points of evidence.
- You will then have a structured conversation with the two other people at your table. You will each get 2-4 minutes to speak about your side and present your arguments. After each side speaks, you will be able to ask questions of each other. KEEP IT CIVIL.
- After all questions have been answered, you will switch side of the argument. You will be given a couple of minutes to review the arguments and then try to summarize the opposing side.
- FINALLY, you will have a conversation and try to come to a consensus about GMOs. Using all of the evidence you have, you will try to agree on GMOs.
