Geography of Our Clothing Activity

Directions: You will be placed in a small group to visit each station with. All group members must actively participate in discussion and completion of work. You will have 15-20 minutes at each station.

Station 1: ‘Clotheslined’

Directions: Read the article called “Clotheslined” as a group. Each person should take turns reading. Once finished, discuss and answer the response questions below:

    1. What countries are listed in this article? (list all)
    2. What is a “T-shirt phase”? What countries have experienced this?
    3. In your option, what are the three most important facts from this article?

Station 2: Mapping Our Clothing

Part 1: Using your ‘Geography of Your Clothing’ assignment, follow the steps below to put your clothes on the map.

    1. Go to www.zeemaps.com
    2. Scroll down to the ‘search for..’ bar. Enter the name of our class map (written on the board) into this section. It should bring you to our class clothing map.
    3. To add your own markers, go to the ‘Additions’ tab and click on ‘Add Marker - Simple’
    4. For the ‘Entry Name’, type in the brand of clothing (ex: Nike, Old Navy, etc.) that you are going to locate.
    5. For the ‘Location’, type the name of the country that this clothing was made in.
    6. For the ‘Description’, put your name.
    7. For the ‘Marker’, put the following:
      • If you are entering a shirt, use a red marker
      • If you are entering pants, use a blue marker
      • If you are entering shoes, use a yellow marker
      • If you are entering another type of clothing, use a green marker
    8. Repeat steps 1-7 for each of your 5 clothing items.

Part 2: Using google search, your task is to look up these common clothing brands and in the space write where their clothing factories are located.

Station 3: ‘Planet Money Makes A T-Shirt’

Directions: Next, we’re going on a journey of a tshirt. Go to http://apps.npr.org/tshirt/#/title to start this journey. Your task is to draw a storyboard showing how a t-shirt gets made. There are five chapters, so two boxes per chapter to draw the story.
