Super Target

Congrats! You and your teammates are now Target Corp Executives who have been entrusted with figuring out the next location for a new Super Target in MN!

Steps to take:

    1. Start by researching where current Super Targets are located in Minnesota/Western Wisconsin. Also, look at where current Walmart stores are in Minnesota. You need to consider them as competition to your business. You will then need to decide what your “ideal” location (city) is.

      2. Walmart: http://tinyurl.com/zymleov
      3. Your Location is:_____________________________________________

    1. Take a screen grab of your city as a whole. This should be done on Earth view of Google Maps.
    2. Using Google Maps, you will want to find a piece of land that is unused, close to other businesses, close to freeways or roadways, and near a customer base (houses).
    3. Take a screen grab of that piece of land.
    4. Once you determine an ideal “possible” store location and capture it’s location in a picture; visit the city’s website and other useful websites to look up information about the area that includes the population, median income, possible competition, etc. These factors are key to determining if this site is good for you.
      1. Population of your city:
      2. Median Income:
      3. Possible Competition (Other stores that are similar to Target):
      4. Surrounding Cities that might visit your Target store:
      5. The combined population of those cities that might visit your store:
      6. Combined population of the city of your store and the surrounding cities (this is your HINTERLAND):
    5. With your group, create a presentation in Google Slides presentation to share your ideal store location and factors that influenced your decision. Guidelines for the presentation are below:

The presentation should include the following:

    1. A large scale map (your piece of land you will build on) that depicts the location for a new Super Target (use your screenshot skills to do this!).

    1. A small scale map (bigger area) that depicts the location of existing Super Targets and Walmarts and the accessibility of transportation to these locations (use your screenshot skills to do this!).
    2. An illustration of land availability for development. (Hint: Aerial photos work well.) This illustration should show roads available for development, as well as potential building and parking lot sites for the new Super Target.
    3. Population patterns of the city:
      1. What is the threshold of the area? How do you know that people will shop there? If only the population of your city came to shop there, would the Target still succeed?
      2. Explain how you know that the population of the city/surrounding areas can support a Super Target. (Is the population big enough? Is the competition good?)
    4. Population of the hinterland that will also support a Super Target:
      1. Provide the population of the hinterland.
      2. Explain how the population of the hinterland can support a Super Target.
    5. Identify geographic reasons that support the location and explain how these reasons can be used to support the new Super Target. Possible geographic reasons are listed below:
      1. median income
      2. nearby competition (lack of or competition that exists)
      3. Access to transportation
      4. Growth of a city (population, economics, etc.)
      5. Racial breakdown of a city (how many white people, black people, Latino people, etc)
      6. Gender breakdown of a city (women, men, etc.) - We know that women are more likely to shop at Target.
