COVID and Camp Meetings Posted -5 June
Dear parents,
We have been delighted with the response for Summer Camp, and have 53 scouts signed up (the highest we’ve had for several years). Bala is one of our favourite campsites, and there are some photos of a recent recce to the site on the 2nd Warwick Members Facebook page. Planning for camp is progressing well.
But we must caution that we are reliant on the government easing Covid restrictions, with the next step on the roadmap “not before” 21 June, and an announcement due on 14 June. Also, although the government headlines are that Step 4 would be the end of legal restrictions, we have been cautioned by the National Youth Agency, who work with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport set the rules for Scouts and other youth organisations, that there are still likely to be some restrictions on residential trips for youth organisations even after Step 4. This could include restrictions on group sizes.
So as well as the uncertainty over when Step 4 will happen, we are also having to deal with the uncertainty of what rules will apply. Unfortunately the rules are unlikely to be firmed up until after the announcement of moving to Step 4 – so on the timeline, that would be during the week after 14 June. There are a whole range of potential outcomes. Clearly we are hoping that we will be able to go ahead as planned. But one outcome is that we might need to reduce the groups sizes by splitting into two one-week camps. The worst case, which we very much hope doesn’t happen, is that a residential camp can’t happen, and we’ll have to resort to an activity camp in Warwick area, like we did last summer.
In the hope that a camp at Bala can go ahead in some form, we plan to hold an information evening for parents. This is particularly aimed at parents of Scouts that haven’t been to camp before, but of course all are welcome. It will be an opportunity to discuss the personal kit list, and you may wish to hold off shopping for any kit until after the meeting. These will start at 7pm (probably lasting for up to an hour) on the following evenings:
Vanguard (girls) – Tuesday 29 June
Vigilant (boys) – Friday 2 July
So please bear with us, and rest assured that we will do as much as we can within whatever restrictions may apply.
Regards
