Teggie - The monster of Bala
Summer Camp 2021 is being held at Lake Bala, North Wales, from Sunday 25th July to Sat 7th August. This will be a fun packed 2 weeks of sailing, paddling, walking, cooking, games and hopefully some sleeping.
This is about the 10th Visit to Bala over the years, but the first in this field, we usually camp in the same farmers field but two across.
The campsite is right on the shores of the lake is for our exclusive use. The lake is used by other water sports groups, and the public but we are at the opposite end to the town so it is quieter here. We will be sharing some of the shores with fisherman but have our own exclusive access beach on to the lake.
This web page hopefully provides all the information yourself and your Scout might want to know about this year’s summer camp. Nearer to camp we will be setting up this years Facebook page where you will be able to receive regular updates and photos of what we are up to. Although we a little isolated from could phone signal so you will have to bear with us. When set up please request to join - 2WK Scout Summer Camp 2019 please search for it on Facebook and request to join.
Many people are a surprised when they discover that we take our scouts away for 2 weeks every summer. There are two main reasons for this.
Firstly, when we arrive on the field the only amenity present is a tap, we take everything else with us. 2 self-drive lorries, full of our tents, kitchen equipment (including the kitchen sink! Leaders only!), toilets, tables, chairs, some boats, food for the first few days, personal kit that will not fit on the coach, .and so on. We are also towing 16 trailers of boats. The Scouts travel by coach and the Young leaders by minibus.
Secondly, take a peek at the camp programme when it gets published – how would we fit everything into a shorter period?? As Sea Scouts we love messing about in boats, and the boating programme itself would fill a week of camp. In addition we try to incorporate some traditional scouting skills including an overnight expedition.
The Scouts will live, cook and eat together with their patrol for the duration of camp. Each patrol is up to 6 scouts, led by a Patrol Leader. Their Patrol campsite will be home for the fortnight, this gives them the freedom and independence that allows them to develop as individuals and to learn to work as a team, within a safe environment monitored by the leader team.
Our experienced leaders run a wide range of activities, leading to number of Scout badges being achieved.
The safety, health and welfare of the Scouts is our highest priority. We offer exciting activities, but within a controlled environment. We inspect sleeping tents and cooking shelters daily to ensure that the Scouts are looking after themselves properly. There is a dedicated Medical Officer at camp and all of the leaders are first aid trained.
