● Any electronic devices, e.g. phones, smart watches, personal music players, kindles etc
● Strappy Tops
● Cigarette lighters
● Make up
● Any aerosol sprays (e.g. spray deodorants, dry hair wash, insect repellents)
● Pen knives (with the exception of over 12’s who hold a valid knife permit) (for those over 12 without permits, their knives can be handed in on the coach and we will run a course towards the beginning of camp)
There are reasons behind all of these, many of which are related to the safety of the Scouts. If you have any issues with the contents here please get in touch and we can explain the reasoning behind them.
Please note we will not be permitting mobile phones (this includes the coach journey). Should any Scout wish to contact their parents, they need to come and discuss it with the leaders. The banning of phones is something we have taken a long time to consider with the reliance on phones ever increasing, however we have concerns about a number of risks which is why we ask that parents ensure no phones are brought. There are many but our main concerns are as follows:
• For every event we set up an “In Touch” system which is a requirement of Scout rules. Scouts in direct contact with the outside compromise this system and are venerable to cyber bullying, inappropriate internet content, and the risk of upsetting news reaching them before the responsible leader team. This can and has led to Scouts finding themselves in danger.
• In the other direction Scouts can upload content to social networks that can not only put themselves at risk but also the other Scouts as well (This has happened too).
• Scouts can be distracted and miss important safety information.
• These gadgets are not suitable for camp conditions and can get lost and broken.
Scouts found with banned items on camp and other events will be dealt with in a fashion agreed between the responsible leader and the parent. The gadget will be confiscated and can be collected by the parent only. In the most serious of cases and as a last resort we do reserve the right to ask parents to collect your Scout from the event.
