I was asked to step in as Den leader of my son's Wolf Den unexpectedly recently and have loved it very much. I was just told I have to register with the BSA to continue in the role, which I completely understand and support. Unfortunately I was foolish recently and got a dwi. Will that disqualify me from being a leader in the BSA application process?

An adult applicant’s Social Security number is required on the adult application form in order for the National Council to conduct a criminal background check. This is done on every volunteer who applies for membership in the BSA. The applicant’s date of birth and driver’s license numbers are also used to help identify potential issues with a volunteer and screen out those who may not be appropriate in a position where they work with youth. The BSA will not accept an application unless the Social Security number is provided.

The Boy Scouts of America has implemented a new, extensive criminal background check program for all its adult volunteers across the nation to better protect its youth members. Starting April 1, the BSA headquarters in Irving, Texas, began using ChoicePoint, a nationally recognized vendor in criminal background checking, to do the checks for its councils in all 50 states. "We've always been very dedicated to providing young people with a safe place to learn and play," said Greg Shields, national BSA spokesman. "We've sought every way we can to prevent child abuse."

Opinions & Thoughts Please .... will a felony conviction some 26 years ago, off parole for 21 years without any other problems, prevent someone from getting BSA approval in our wards charter? We have asked a few questions at our local (not so local but ....) Scout Office & seem to be getting multiple answers in the course of a royal run-a-round. So here's the story: A month back we called a brother to serve in a scouting position in the ward. He was elated & excited & eagar, though he also expressed concern that BSA might not let him.
