Would It Be Alright

I wrote this in May, 2005. The recording was made on December 17, 2005 and when I performed it as a sing-along, I wasn't clear enough in reminding the audience that they were just playing the part of the Great American Public. They were just actors. Afterward, my friend Dianna was in tears. "But we do care!", she said. Yes, of course we do. If you ever perform it, be careful.

Lyrics

Would it be all right if I always lie to you,

If I tell you things that really aren’t true and

If I make up facts that support my world view?

It’ll be all right when I lie to you.

Would it be all right if I make you my slave?

You can work for me ‘til the day you’re in your grave.

I can give you all those trinkets that you crave.

It’ll be all right. You can be my slave.

We don’t care, we don’t care, we don’t care.

We don’t care, we don’t care, we don’t care.

Would it be all right if I tell you what to think,

How to wear your hair and what kind of beer to drink?

You can take these pills and you will never need a shrink.

It’ll be all right if you never think.

Would it be all right if I send you off to war

And neglect to say what you’re really fighting for?

It’s just a great big game and you can learn to keep score.

It’ll be all right when you fight my war.

We don’t care, we don’t care, we don’t care.

We don’t care, we don’t care, we don’t care.

Would it be all right if I gather all the gold?

I can keep it safe for you until you’re old.

When you come for it I’ll just say that it’s been sold.

It’ll be all right when I take your gold.

Would it be all right, could I be your holy man?

You can worship me you can be my biggest fan

While I turn your faith into nothing but a scam.

It’ll be all right for the holy man.

We don’t care, we don’t care, we don’t care.

We don’t care, we don’t care, we don’t care.

We don’t care, (if I lie) we don’t care (if I lie), we don’t care (if I lie).

We don’t care, (if I lie) we don’t care (if I lie), we don’t care.
