Apple Lossless: Files can be played in iTunes and via an iPod

also known as Apple Lossless Audio Codec, ALAC, or Apple Lossless Encoder, ALE) created by Apple Inc. Files are saved as a .m4a filetype.

To rip a CD using ALAC choose the encoder via the preferences tab in iTunes.

Just converted a CD to ALAC "Systematic Chaos" by Dream Theater ...ended up with 564Mb of files.

So you get quality at the cost of disc space. Originally on the CD approx 750 Mb.
