BBC iPlayer and 4K UHD

The BBC has started on a mission to support 4K UHD via iPlayer.

At the moment support is limited to a few options only. A 4 minute clip from Planet Earth II is available to Sky customers with a Sky Q, Virgin customers with a Virgin TiVo V6 box and some of the latest Panasonic UHD 4K TVs.

It is now possible to see the Planet Earth II footage on Sky Q in UHD. The clip has been automatically converted from the HLG original to a SDR, standard colour asset for use with BBC iPlayer on Sky Q.

World Cup 2018 saw many matches transmitted in 4K UHD but only devices that supported HLG could stream the content.

Wimbledon 2019 was also available on iPlayer in 4K UHD resolution. Main matches only.
