DAC

A DAC is a Digital-to-Analogue Converter.

A DAC converts digital audio information into an analogue audio signal.

The digital signal is made up of a series of 0s and 1s.

DACs have many ways to capture a digital input.

Common inputs used are Toslink Optical Signal, S/P DIF and USB.

Bluetooth and HDMI are also available on some DACs.

After the digital signal is converted, the Analogue Audio Signal can then be sent to a headphone amp or an amplifier.

There are many DACs in the market. You can get portable DACs which cost less than £50 to some seriously advanced devices like the Chord Electronics (approx £8000).
