George Roddam Angus

GEORGE RODDAM ANGUS was born in North Acomb, Bywell in 1892 (3Q Hexham). He worked as a Solicitor with G. W. Hodgson of Stanhope, Durham until World War 1 began.

George enlisted in December 1914 and was posted as 3rd Lieutenant with the 6th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He was slightly wounded in March 1916 and the was followed by a promotion to the rank of Temporary Captain in April 1916. This was reverted back to 2nd Lieutenant on his return to England in April 1916.

He was promoted to Acting Captain in Nov 1917. His distinguished military career the Military Cross for his service in France, Belgium and at home in England but in particular for bravery in rescuing men buried in a collapsed trench near Ypres.

These medals are displayed in the Durham Light Infantry Museum - Medal Case 7 Display Group 11.

During the Second World War, George commanded the 16th (Weardale) Battalion, Durham Home Guard. He died at his home at Westgate in Weardale in 1976, aged 83.
