Colony Homecoming Held May 3

On Sunday, May 3, about 30 people gathered for the 2015 Colony Cemetery Association annual Homecoming. They met at the Colony Church, located on Highway 95 north of Flatonia.

Because renovation projects were underway at the church, the group met outdoors and enjoyed perfect weather.  They enjoyed a picnic under the big oak trees and participated in a meeting to discuss the upkeep of the cemetery and the church.  Jerome Svatek led the group in grace before the meal.  After lunch President J.J. Beck conducted the meeting.  Amy Beck read the minutes, and Etta Brown presented a written financial report.  Betty Sanders reported on the remodeling projects that were in progress and provided background on the builder, Michael Gilson.   Projects include building a wheelchair ramp to the bathroom, re-wiring, re-caulking the windows, and adding wainscoting to the walls.  Painting will be provided by volunteers or added as a project for the following year.

A cemetery web site can be viewed at https://sites.google.com/site/colonycemetery.  Included on this site are a list of all gravesites in the cemetery, photos of the monuments, a copy of the original deed to the property, minutes from past annual meetings, the information that was used to obtain the historical marker designation, and information about making donations.

The Colony Homecoming will be held again on the first Sunday in May 2016.
