2013

Colony Cemetery Association Board

3/30/13

Present:  President JJ Beck, Vice-President Karen Monsen, Secretary Amy Beck, Treasurer Etta Brown, Cemetery Manager Irv Davis

Officers of the Colony Cemetery Association met at the Colony Church at 2:00 pm on March 30, 2013.

Betty Sanders, on behalf of the Brown family, presented her findings on remodeling the bathroom and asked for approval from the Board to proceed.  She had met with a handyman who presented a bid for new plywood exterior and interior, providing a lavatory base, installing a water saver toilet, installing a ceiling, and painting for $750.00.  Suggestions were made to also inquire about a new door and a floor covering.  She was also asked to get a bid for sheet rocking the open spots in the wainscoting, with the possibility of spending a total of up to $1,000.  As a step two to consider in the future, she was also asked to ask the builder for further estimates to address the concerns about accessibility to the bathroom and for repair of the benches.  President Beck was asked to find out how to get the Brown reunion fund to be associated with the tax-free status of the Cemetery Association funds.

Gravestone repairs were another item of discussion.  It was agreed that only leveling was under consideration.

Grounds maintenance was discussed.  Mowing is currently $250.00.  Everyone agreed that it would be difficult to find another mower who is willing to be periodical and not recurring so the current situation was approved for mowing.  For taking down a tree or removing a stump, however, Etta will call a person that she has used who has the appropriate equipment.

In preparation for the Homecoming, Amy will place a notice in the Argus two weeks ahead and will purchase the supplies.  Officers will meet at the church at 2:00 pm on Saturday before the Sunday event to clean and set up.

The Edward Jones fund has grown from $45,000 to $48,000.  Donations will be requested at the Homecoming.  People will be reminded to remember donations to the cemetery in their estate planning and to ask for donations made at funerals to go to the Cemetery Association.  People will be reminded that for donations under $250 the check should be kept as documentation; for donations of $250 or over, a receipt will be provided.

 Off Agenda:

Irv mentioned that a concern for small cemeteries is that people who do not want to pay to be buried will be attracted there and that our by-laws should have language added to prohibit this.  Karen said that she would look at the laws governing cemeteries.
