1876 J. Young Deed

In 1876, John A. Young and his wife, Margaret Inez (Hunsucker) Young deeded two acres to the Colony community for church grounds. A translation of the deed from the original handwritten document is shown below. A true handwritten copy of the deed may be found as an attachment below in Adobe pdf:

Know all men by these presents that we, John Young and M.I. Young, his wife of the County of Fayette and State of Texas for and in consideration of the love we have for the cause of Christ, and from our earnest desire to promote his heritage on earth do give and grant and by these presents convey unto C. J. Lane, T. S. Menefee, J. T. Campbell etc, trustees duly appointed of ?? Circuit, in Columbus Mission District, of Texas Conference, of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and to their successors in office a certain Tract of land situated in Fayette County – and State aforesaid about 21 miles S.W. from La Grange on the waters of Peach and Buckner Creeks in trust that said premises shall be held, kept, and maintained and disposed of, as a place of Divine worship for the use of the ministry and membership of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, Subject to the desc_____ usage and Ministerial appointments of said church as from time to time authorized and declared by the General Conference of said Church and the annual conference within whose bounds the said premises are situate. Provided the first House erected on said premises be permitted for the use of the community in which it is situated for neighborhood school purposes until other permission shall have been made for said neighborhood school purposes provide said use for school purposes be not allowed to conflict with the said purpose of Church worship. Beginning at the S.W. corner of a 435 acre Survey made for W. C. McGown and Elisha Floyd at a stake from which a Post Oak 12 in. in diameter marked T bears N 64ª E. 5 ½ varas thence East 200 varas to a stake for the S.E. corner of this survey from which a Post Oak marked bears west 2 ft, to marked S bears East 2 ft Thence North 57 varas to a Stake from which a Post Oak marked N.E. bears west 11 varas thence, West 200 varas to a Stake from which a Post Oak marked N bears North 43 East 3 varas, Thence South to the place of beginning containing Two Acres. To have and to hold all and singular the premises therein conveyed with the rights, tenements, benedictaments and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining unto the said Trustees C.J. Lane T.S. Menefee J.T. Campbell Etc. and their successors in office for ever and we hereby bind ourselves, our heirs and administrations to ___ and forever defend all and singular the said premises unto the said trustees C.J. Lane T.S. Menefee J.T. Campbell etc. and their successors in office against the lawful claims of every person whomsoever claiming or to claim the same or any part, thereof, the testimony whereof we shall execute – set our names This the 18 day of May year A.D. 1876.

Margaret Young Before me, the undersigned authority this day personally came M. I. Young to me personally known to be the wife of Jno. A. Young she being a party to the Instrument of Writing hereunto attached, bearing date on the 18 day of November A.D. 1876 and having been by me examined separate and apart from her said husband, and said instrument having been by me fully explained to her she acknowledged to same to be her free act, and deed, and declared that she had willingly and without fear or compulsion signed, seald, and delivered the same for the considerations and purposes therein stated. At the same time came Jno. A. Young and acknowledged that he had executed, signed, sealed and delivered the said Instrument of Writing for the purposes and considerations therein stated. To certify, all of which, I hereunto sign my hand and capacity, and affix my Seal of office on this the 18th day of November A.D. 1876. E. H. Stardiran(?) N.P. P.C.
