Bridge 51 - CPR

Mile 142.81

This through steel girder bridge had a single 66' span that lifted the rails 27 3/4' above the CPR's tracks below. The structure included five bents and concrete abutments for a total length of 77 1/4'. [GTRB&B]

Originally, the OA&PS asked for a level crossing at this location. However, the CPR deemed this too dangerous and asked for an overhead crossing or a subway. [Renfrew Mercury, 1892-11-04] An overhead crossing would be costly, and a subway was not practical as it would be below the level of the river. In the week of 1892-10-07, the matter was before the Railway Committee of the Privy Council, which decided to send their engineer, Mr Schreiber to the crossing, from whose report they would rule.[Ottawa Free Press, 1892-10-14]
