EAL/The Globe

At Unity City Academy we have many students who have English as a second language. Our students come from different backgrounds and cultures with a variety of needs and different learning styles.

We offer a tailored curriculum for EAL students that covers basic vocabulary in English and support in other curriculum areas. Our English interventions for the students take place in ‘The Globe’ which is a designated area designed for EAL students. The Globe is staffed by a specialist EAL teacher. The Globe follows a timetable of lessons from Monday to Thursday for Y9 and Y10 and one to one intervention sessions also take place every Friday for Y11 students.

As bilingualism and multilingualism is an asset the students are encouraged to learn English with the help of their first language.

For Y7 and Y8 EAL students we also offer EAL intervention sessions in the library from Monday to Thursday. Again this is staff by a specialist EAL teacher and support is given to targeted students.

All of our students also have access to Flash Academy. This is an interactive learning resource that accelerates English language acquisition from 45 home languages on any internet enabled device. Students receive learning support and online lessons across a range of subjects. Flash Academy is designed for both classroom use and remote learning.
