One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.

Frank Smith

Learning a language is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture and way of life. It fosters intercultural awareness, an appreciation of difference and the ability to communicate with lots of different people. Languages can help improve your earning power and enhance your general literacy and problem solving skills. In the increasingly global environment in which we live, the ability to communicate in another language is invaluable.

Around 275 million people speak French and it is one of the fastest growing languages in the world. Current projections indicate that French will be the most spoken language on the planet by 2050, with around 700 million speakers. It is also the only language, other than English, spoken on all six inhabited continents.

At Unity City Academy, we believe learning a language is fun and aim to ensure that all pupils enjoy their learning and make rapid progress. In lessons, you will explore various aspects of the French-speaking world and look at different cultures and traditions, whilst aiming to develop confidence in communicating in French.

At Key Stage 3, we aim to develop the fundamental knowledge required for GCSE studies in French. We look at relationships, leisure, school, local area, holidays, technology, media, healthy living and careers, whilst embedding key grammatical knowledge. We want all pupils to become independent and confident linguists.

At Key Stage 4, pupils work towards achieving a GCSE in French, following the AQA specification. Pupils further develop their linguistic skills and develop their fluency over the course of Year 10 and Year 11. Studying French at Unity City Academy enables pupils to achieve the necessary qualifications for the Ebacc, considered essential to many degrees and careers. This will open up lots of doors and opportunities beyond school.

We are certain that you will love French as much as we do! Get ready to be transported to the turquoise waters of Martinique, the deepest rainforests of Madagascar, the snowy castles of Switzerland and the bustling streets of cosmopolitan Paris!

À bientôt!
