Ada Lovelace
by Hayley Wong
Ada Lovelace is famous for inventing the first computer. Ada was born on December 10, in the year 1815. She was born in London in the United Kingdom. She's known to be “history's first programmer”.
She was the daughter of a famous poet, Lord Byron and Isabella Milbanke. She got a scientific education from her mother, she combined their skills and described her work as “poetic science”.
Growing up, Ada was very clever and curious, but not the adventure kind, she wanted to invent things, like making a flying machine. So she studied birds, she was already curious about them at first, so she merrily studied them. When she studied, she would always put her research in a tidy notebook. For example, she called her research of flying, “flyology” She was always curious about random things, she would try to even build something once in a while, but it never really worked. Ada never thought of being a real inventor.
That was until one day, she met an old and cranky but likable mathematician, Charles Babbage at a dance. They instantly became friends, they had a lot in common, such as loving mathematics. Charles Babbage even let Ada see a creation he made. It was a machine that could automatically do mathematics calculations, it was efficient too! This inspired Ada to make a machine as well. Since it was long ago then when Ada was born, it was very advanced to create a machine like Charles. But she still imagined all the things possible beyond mathematics, such as things that could do even more than just mathematics calculations. But first Ada had to write a complicated algorithm to order the machine to do certain things. This is what people called the first computer program in the world! This is why on the second Tuesday of October every year, we celebrate Ada Lovelace day.
Ada Lovelace unfortunately died because of uterine cancer at only the age of 36. She died on November 27, 1852, in Marylebone.

Perspectives on Art-The Scream (Chapter 2)
by Ellie Yuen and Cyra Pun
The Scream is a fairly popular painting created by Edvard Munch in 1893. It is an oil, tempera, pastel, and crayon-type painting on cardboard! It is a 91 cm x 73.5 cm (36 in x 28.9 in) painting, it is bigger than you think! It is also located in the National Museum and the Munch Museum, in Oslo and Norway respectively. Munch created two versions of The Scream in paint and two in pastels, as well as a lithograph stone from which several prints survived. But both painted versions have been stolen, and since recovered. In 2012, one of the past commanded the highest price paid for an artwork at a public auction at the time.
In Munch’s diary, titledm ”Nice 22 January 1892” the following of his source of inspiration to create The Scream. One evening, he was walking along a path, and suddenly he felt tired and unwell. Then he stopped and realized something was off, the sun was setting, but the clouds were turning blood red. Then, he felt a great ear-piercing scream passing through nature. That was what inspired Munch to paint this picture, painting the clouds as actual bright red blood. And it slowly became The Scream.
Many people think that the picture The Scream, symbolizes the man covering his ears screaming. But the person in the middle of the picture was covering his ears, refusing to listen to the pain the society gave to nature, shocked at how people could do this to their world. The hurt face in the painting has become one of the most classic images in art, seen as representing the anxiety of the human condition.
Interview (comments)
EUM4 Lynette (12)
This piece of artwork is very impressive. The paint used to create this painting is oil paint. There are several ways to protect artwork from direct and filtered sunlight. However, if you don't take precautions before it's too late, your oil painting will be irreparably damaged by light exposure. Now back to the painting, painting by Edvard Munch that became his most famous work. He completed two versions in 1893, another in 1895, and yet another likely in 1910.
PIA5 Anya Sin (22)
This piece of artwork is amazing, it might be a little old and weird of how he is. I think the worker should add some more people to the bridge of the painting to make the bridge more crowded. The sunset is gorgeous. Also, I think that the worker should add some mountains in the background to make it more interesting. The person screaming in there is wiggly.
Games Day
Do you know when is games day? Games Day is going to be on the 30th April. Many students and teachers are practicing for the coming events. There are numerous events on the games day, including long jump, high jump, softball throw. Except for those above, there’s also a parent-child event for 4x100m relay. Moreover, P5s and P6s have inter-class relays.
So, we interviewed a few people about their expectations and to see what event they’ve joined.
The first person is Ellie Yuen in BAO4, let’s see what she replies to us.
“I’m Ellie, and I really hope that there will be no rain. Because it rained, we weren't able to participate in the events. I chose to join the long jump and 60m event. Hope we can join the games day on the coming Tuesday!”
Secondly, we also interviewed Hazel Lam in ASJ6. She replied to us.
“I’m now P6 and because of the COVID, I couldn’t join the games day events for the past four years. I think I only joined the Games day event at p1 and p2. So I hope to join it this time!”
This it the end of our article, thank you for using you time!

The Valid Voyage Pt.3
Continuing
“That was crazy!”
Said Sarah,
“I’m speechless!”.
John mentioned that they were only 21.7% of the way through and they would have to face many, many more challenges along the way.
“Oh, come on! Why does this take so long?”
Asked a slightly annoyed Colin. Everybody just stared at him.
“Oh, now what?!”
exclaimed Colin.
“Alright, alright. We’re doing this as fast as we possibly can and we’re also trying to keep you as comfortable as possible. You wanted to join, right?”
John said calmly with a hint of annoyance to his tone.
“Fine, I’ll try to appreciate this,” Colin mumbled as he rolled his eyes. The next few days (days 2-9) were quite calm and pleasant.
They enjoyed their time in the spacecraft but very soon they would indulge in a great battle with a supernatural being that was the possessor of a cosmic part of the universe.
“Woah, I think the radars are picking up a weird signal. We aren’t anywhere close though!” Said John.
“How about for safety purposes we just take out our weapons.” Suggested Malissa, “Make sure the kiddies are out too!”.
Everyone bursted into laughter since by kiddies she meant turrets. That laughter was immediately struck down by extreme shaking in the main cabin.
“SOME OF US MIGHT HAVE TO GO OUT AND SEE WHAT IT IS. TAKE THE WEAPONS!” Shouted Alex.
Immediately, John, Sarah, and Alex put on their special suits, took the weapons, tethered themselves onto the ship, opened the door, and marched out. Malissa and Colin followed even though reluctant to leave. They all marched out with weapons and they all were shocked to see a half Cerberus, half eagle, and half snake creature in front of them. They couldn’t talk in these suits due to them being soundproof but all of them had thought,
“Oh.. NO!”.
This dangerous being was called a “Rhőþeçħ” and was one of the strongest creatures in the universe. The crew all fired their weapons at the same time but it barely did any damage to the Rhőþeßçħ. They realized that there was no way to do any sort of damage to it and the team would have to ditch the effort of fighting it. Everyone rushed back into the spacecraft and sealed the door shut, leaving the Rhőþeßçħ outside without anything to do again.
“That was… Crazy," Alex said, his voice merely a whisper as his heart pounded out of his chest, “It was humongous!”.
“I know right? That was mad!” Sarah shouted, adrenaline pumping through her body.
“Imagine we had to fight that. We’d be gone in no time!”Collin Hypothesised, his mind full of thoughts. This voyage was a dangerous and life-threatening one and it was all for a singular crystal that was still being guarded by a destructive creature. Paranoia crammed their minds, sending goosebumps down their spine,
‘What would happen next?’
‘Will we get hurt?”
“How can we prevent it?”
The group decided that they would answer these endless questions as soon as possible. Throughout days 10-20, nothing happened. However, the group was getting tired of their repetitive life on the spaceship that they contemplated quitting. Until one day, another being would soon be found by the crew.
Pt.4 out soon!
Anne Frank
Annelies Marie Frank was a German-born girl who kept a diary documenting her and her family’s life of hiding under Nazi persecution during the German occupation, she is an acclaimed diarist who described the daily life of hiding from the Nazis in an Amsterdam dam attic.
Annie was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1929. In 1934, when she was four years old, she, along with her family moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands, after Adolf Hilter and the Nazis took control over Germany. By May 1940, the Franks were kept in Amsterdam by the German occupation. Anne lost her German citizenship. Even though she spent most of her life in the Netherlands, Nanie never became a Dutch local. As the arrest of the Jews increased in July 1942, the family went hiding behind a bookshelf in secret rooms in the building where Anne’s father worked. The hiding place was referred to as the “secret annex”, Until the Franks were arrested by the Gestapo on the 4th August 1944, Anne Frank kept and regularly wrote in the diary she received as a birthday present in 1942.
After their arrest, the Franks were sent to concentration camps. On the 1st of November, 1944, Anne Frank and her sister, Margot, were transit to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they passed away a few months later. They were estimated by the Red Cross to have died in March, with Dutch authorities setting 31st March as the valid date. Proximate research assumed that they died in late February or early March from typhus fever.
Anne’s father Otto, the only survivor of the Franks, returned to Amsterdam following the war to find that his daughter’s diary had been saved by his female secretaries, Meip Gies and Bep Voskuil. He decided to fulfill his daughter’s dreams to become a writer, so, he published her diary in 1947. It was later translated into over seventy languages.
