Become part of a friendly, supportive and committed group of students and help make positive change within the department and University.
We'd love for you to join our committee and become a Psychology Disability Student Champion. Student champions are key to the committee to help ensure it is student led as well as helping to amplify student voices in the department.
Becoming part of the committee is a voluntary role, so you can be involved as much or as little as you want/are able. Take a look below to find out more about joining the committee as well as our upcoming interest event.
We're holding a (no obligation) interest event for anyone who is thinking about joining the committee but would like to find out a little bit more first:
Week 6, Tuesday 4th November
3-4pm
Location PS/C/108
Come along to hear more about us, chat to students already involved and see if joining the committee is for you. If you'd like to come along, please complete the attached google form (you need to be signed into your UoY google account to access the form).
If you want to find out more, but can't make this event - just complete the form to let us know and we'll be in touch.
What you get involved with and how much you get involved with it is up to you - it's all voluntary. We're very committed to student champions prioritising their mental wellbeing and studies.
Roles can include social media and website management, blog post writing, organising and running support events, socials or you can help run a campaign. This isn't an exhaustive list and roles can change as we're led by the needs of students. You are also very welcome to suggest ideas and initiatives too.
You can check out the terms of reference below for more details.
While being a student disability champion is a voluntary role - we make it official.
We do this through our 'terms of reference' and getting you signed up as an official volunteer at the University. This helps to boost your work with us on your CV, as it's an official voluntary position and means you can get specific references for this beyond a regular student reference.
See the terms of reference below for more details.
Amanda Hickey, the department's disability champion, facilitates and supports all student disability champions.
Amanda provides support, guidance and resources for any events or initiative students would like to do (wherever possible). You'll also become part of the inter-departmental disability network: DISCO (Disability Community) Project. This network not only provides further opportunities and chances to connect with others across the University, it can also provide further support for any ideas or initiatives you may have.
As an official university volunteer, some staff training and support is opened up to you as well if this helps to support any of the roles you take on.
Check out the terms of reference below for more details.
We're so happy you're interested in joining us! Here's what to do:
Read our 'Terms of Reference' below: To make this an official voluntary role within the University, we have a terms of reference. Don't worry - this does not commit you to having to do a certain number of hours or a certain task. It just sets out what the volunteering role is and how it works.
Once you've read the terms of references, if you're happy to become a psychology disability student champion, complete our interest form (also linked on the terms of reference): Psychology Disability Committee/Student Champion Interest Form
Amanda Hickey, will then get in touch to help you come on board with us.
If you have any questions at any stage and/or you would like to have a chat to find out more before joining, just email Amanda Hickey (amanda.hickey@york.ac.uk), the Psychology Disability Champion who facilitates and supports the committee. You can also come along to our interest event on Friday 8th November (see details above).
To help make this an official voluntary role, you'll need to complete a 'Right to Work' check and sign up as a casual worker at the University. Once you have registered your interest, Amanda will guide you through this process to make it as easy as possible for you. If you're unsure about your 'Right to Work' due to any visa requirments, just email Amanda.
Below is our terms of reference for the psychology disability student champion role. See the 'How to Join' section above for more information about what this is and how to register your interest in joining the psychology disability committee.
Please note: You'll need to be signed into your University of York google account to access the terms of reference document below.
