Prompt: Observe a draw food/drink items, include background, any medium
For this first assignment, I observed and drew an apple that I had picked that morning. I cut a slice out of it and let it turn brown from the air to show how beauty can be on the outside, but something can still be rotten inside. I used paint for the background (taking inspiration from other artists there) and for the outside of the apple, but used pastels for the rotten inside.
Mediums used: Acrylic paint, pastels, 7 x 10
Prompt: Observe and draw a prized possession, any medium.
For my sketchbook assignment, I wanted to play into the idea that our prized possessions are not what everyone would realize. I decided to show what was in my wallet, including my prized possession: a two-dollar bill that belonged to my Grandpa. I wanted to emphasize that bill through its larger size and the shading around it to show its importance to me that others wouldn't realize.
Mediums used: Acrylic paint, colored pencil, white jell pen, black ballpoint, 7 x 10
Prompt: Do a series of continuous line drawings, at least one blind contour drawing, ballpoint pen
For this assignment, I chose to draw four one-line drawings of the same tree, but in different seasons. They go from spring (left) to winter (bottom left). I wanted to show how something can change throughout the year and used layers of marks to create different values. They have simple backgrounds but I think it works here because I didn't want to take away from the trees. The last drawing, winter, was a blind contour so I closed my eyes while still drawing one line and I'm very proud of how it turned out.
Mediums used: black ballpoint pen, 7 x 10
Prompt: Draw a flower, make it dangerous, full rand of value, complementary color scheme, and full background with fantastical foliage
For this assignment, I chose to draw a belladonna plant, a dangerous flower used in poison. I'm proud of the detail I put into the leaves and flowers and am also impressed by the background. I didn't know what to do until I had to the idea to completely fill the background with black. I think this was a smart decision and made the plant pop off the page.
