Essential Questions:
How do artists create works of art that effectively communicate?
How do texture and repetition help create movement and unity in a print?
Reflection on Work:
I chose to communicate the issue of deforestation. I felt like this issue is important because I’m very interested in drawing nature, especially trees so the idea of them being destroyed makes me mad. It’s also a topic I've written about many times. I think this is important to communicate this issue because It’s something people take for granted, and because it’s not happening near us people think it’s not important, but that’s not true.
One challenge I encountered during this project was showing the many problems that deforestation brings. I wanted to show its effect on both people and the environment, which I think I did a good job of after much consideration. I think I was successful in communicating my concerns because I used footprints to show the impact on the inhabitants of the forests and I used buildings and smoke to show the consequences it has on the environment.
I used texture and carving in my print to display different areas that each drew their attention while still being cohesive. I made sure to have lots of black space for the smoke to show its danger but also used big areas of white to show the lack of forest in the area. If I were able to do this project again I would focus more on creating curved lines because I feel like there are too many straight lines that it takes away from the piece as a whole.
The most challenging part of this project for me was printing. I struggled to get a good print, and I was very disheartened because there were little dots all over my prints. I couldn’t figure out where these dots came from and no matter how many times I washed my linoleum and tools, the dots would still be there. I handled this by making more and more prints until I got some that I was more happy with.
