By having rules or limitations on my project it helped to stretch my creative process by having me think outside the box. Being able to only follow the guidelines means leaving my mark and my style on the work while under constraints. This requires knowing my own art style and knowing how to show my style while still obeying the rules. When one of the limits was time, it also meant having to make rapid decisions knowing they would impact the end result of your work. This can be stressful, but it can also produce new art you hadn’t expected.
Working with others' creative decisions has influenced my art because it means taking into account other ideas and perspectives I haven’t seen yet. When a classmate drew a flower on my collage I was inspired to recreate Monet’s Water Lilies, an idea I wouldn’t have thought of at the moment on my own. It also means having to learn to problem-solve. If I didn’t like an idea that was put on the paper, I had to find a creative way to change or work with the piece. I liked this project because you got to see how everyone came up with new ideas based on what others had added to their piece.
This project has definitely impacted my future work because it has changed the way I think about the creative process. Usually, I like to plan out the entire piece, for fear of messing up and having to change something on the fly. This project really showed me that it’s okay to not have a solid plan and to establish what you want to do as you go along. Even though I didn’t have a clear vision of the outcome when I first started my collage, I really loved how it turned out. While I still like having a plan, this project has shown me that going with the flow doesn’t have to be stressful, and you can still love what you create in the end.
