Purpose
To create four equally formed tiles
To demonstrate the effects of layering glaze colors
To develop glazing skills
To contribute to a test tile wall for current and future ceramics students
Reflection
The aspects of a ceramics piece that might be able to show attention to quality are the layers of glaze, even tiles, and clear textures. I made sure to have my layers of glaze very even, made sure that I had some clear textures from top left to bottom right, and even tiles. It was very interesting to see how the tiles changed when they came out of the kiln. When I layered different colors onto the tiles, at first before it was fired all that was visible was the color on top but after it came out of the kiln, the high temperatures melted the glaze, causing the colors to mix in with each other creating a beautiful mixture of colors. This surprised me because I was not expecting the glaze to change so drastically when it came out of the kiln. When the glazes are first applied the colors are primarily plain, opaque colors, however, when they are removed from the kiln they have a nice glossy finish on top of many vibrant and interesting colors. In conclusion, I learned a lot about glazing during this exercise. Learning about this benefited me a lot because it taught me how to layer glazes correctly, in this exercise we had to layer multiple glaze colors on top of each other so I learned what they look like when mixed together. I was also able to gain more experience with applying texture to clay because we had to add a texture of our choice to the tile. Lastly, another important thing that benefited me during this assignment was seeing how the glazes change before and after being fired in the kiln. The glaze changes a lot from when you first brush it on to when you take it out of the kiln, the colors become glossy and vibrant, and in some instances, the colors change completely from when they come out of the kiln.
Here are some other forms of test tiles that I found pretty interesting:
I thought that this one was pretty cool becasue it is sort of like a keychain so it seems pretty practical to use as a test tile.
I like how these test tiles conveniently stand up making it easy to see them and adding some more texture to them
similar to the ones above these ones are also standing ub by themselves but they come together to form a circle full of test tiles which i found cool.
