Purpose: Make a slab mug that demonstrates connecting slabs securely, creating and attaching a handle, and illustrates a personal narrative. This should be done through the handle, textures, added-on features and/or glazing.
Reflection:
This narrative mug tells the story of a very memorable hike that I went on with my parents on a trip to Vermont. We were staying with my aunt and uncle and decided to go on this hike that was highly recommended due to the view at the end of it. The hike itself was through a lush forest with dark green leaves all around us with little sunlight able to poke through the trees above. Along the trail were raspberry bushes, overflowing with ripe fruit. After a while, we made one last scramble up some rocks and reached the end of the hike. There were rolling green hills leading all the way to the bases of impressive mountains on a clear sunny day with only a few clouds in the sky. On the way down we were met by a friendly-looking deer in the distance. This hike was memorable because of how suddenly the mountains came into view making it even more impressive. In order for my mug to describe this story I decided to replicate the mountain range extruding from the rest of the mug surrounded by trees. I made a raspberry vine with a red berry on my handle to show the raspberry bushes along the trail. I carved out the trail and added slabs for the trees, deer, mountains, and clouds.
If I could go back in time to make my narrative mug more clear I would make more of an emphasis on how the mountains off in the distance really emerged from the trees. When I went on this hike in Vermont, I was blown away by how suddenly the mountains popped out from beneath the trees so I would add more trees to really emphasize this.
