Redfin pickerel
Ceramic 6.5’’ long by 9.5’’ long
I really like how many different vibrant and interesting colors there are on the ram. It is fascinating to look at all of the unique and interesting patterns. I love how there is so much character and personality in the ram and how it really looks like it is saying somthing to you. It is amazing that it was all made out of wood and hand painted and hand carved
Artists and Art Culture Studied: Ami Vitale, Tim Christensen, Joel Sartore, Anne London, and Oaxacan Alebrijes from Mexico.
project goals:
To use art in raising awareness of Endangered Species in New England;
To learn about artists who work with animals as their subjects, (specifically, Ami Vitale, Tim Christensen, Joel Sartore, Anne London, and Oaxacan Alebrijes from Mexico).
To become acquainted with basic ceramic vocabulary;
To learn about and find inspiration in the highly patterned art (Alebrijes) from Oaxaca, Mexico;
To form and paint a low relief ceramic tile that contains both imagery of a species of your choice and an indication of the systems around it which promote that species’ survival.
My five patterns are food, habitat, water, current, and sunlight. The food is symbolized by the buds around the animal because the redfin pickerel preys on bugs for its food. Habitat is symbolized by the rocky bottom of the tile. Sunlight is symbolized by the sunrays flooding down onto the fish. The current which helps the fish move to a new habitat is symbolized by the rushing wind marks in the background. Water is the most important thing for a fish and it is symbolized in the entire background of the tile. I think that the bugs at the top of the tile really get my message across because it shows what they have in their diet.
For my color scheme, I decided to use warm colors. These colors are very rare to see in the pickerel’s real habitat and I liked the idea of really expanding what the natural colors would be. I like how the colors on the tile because they are all very vibrant and look very good together. If i were to do this again i thing i would go with a complementary color scheme instead so that i could represent both sided of the color wheel.
The species i chose is the redfin pickerel. I chose this species because i have great memories going out fishing and catching them with my dad. I think that it is very important for people to know about my species because it is one of the newly endangered species of fish in maine. It is rather uncommon for fish to be endangered compared to other animals so it is very important to keep them around with us. The most important thing we can do to keep this species alive is to make sure that we don't pollute any of the pond or lakes around our state and to always release it if we catch one.
