Purpose:
To study and analyze the different strategies and techniques of famous portrait photographers
To explore innovative ways of “setting the stage” and composing within the frame
To strengthen technical and problem-solving skills by experimenting with lighting effects, camera angles, framing devices, and the use of props, clothing, face and body position to convey a sense of mood, express emotion, or suggest a narrative.
Here are my 3 favorite portraits of a classmate (Mollie)!
Here is a photo of my classmate Mollie! We were messing around with what we could do with a corn prop. Mollie offhandedly posed using the corn cob as a phone and we ran with it. This one got a bunch of laughs from us and I like the unexpected bit of humor!
For this photo, we randomly found a miltary hat in our prop pile. Mollie wore it on a whim, but I ended up really enjoying it. I had her pose as a soldier awaiting an order.
I love the look of this photo! I wanted the mirror to look like a window into another world. I experimented with different placements of the mirror and I as the photographer moved around to have differnet parts of her face reflected as well.
Here are my 3 favorite portraits of a friend/family Member!
Here is my friend Ella who is seen here wearing five pairs of sunglasses. I thought this was a fun idea to play with! This reminds me of many pairs of eyes on a spider.
This took some inspiration from the famous painting American Gothic. I wanted the background to be of our kitchen to emphasize the fact that she's in our home!
This is a picture of my mom in her favorite big armchair. She was sitting down originally and I just asked her to pose while looking sad or thoughtful. I like how this one turned out because I think it tells a story of her backstory, like why is she so sad?
