An Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) allows eligible students to explore a topic that may not be offered in the traditional high school curriculum. Students are encouraged to be creative and pursue any interest(s) they may have.
This independent project, internship or work study will count as a half-credit course per semester (a year long ELO would total 1 full credit). Students may use an ELO as a fifth class (for eligibility purposes) with permission from the administration.
An ELO is different from the independent study options offered at Yarmouth High School because it allows students to work with experts in the topic of choice outside of school or gain work experience while standard independent studies require an in-school expert to work with the student full time. Students must complete research and reflections, create a final product, and present their learning in one of several presentation formats. Students are graded on a Pass/Fail basis for their work; upon successful completion of an ELO the student's transcript will indicate a Pass.
