For parents

An Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) allows juniors and seniors to explore a topic that may not be offered in the traditional high school curriculum. Students are encouraged to be creative and pursue any interest(s) they may have.

This independent project, internship or work study will count as a half-credit elective and cannot fulfill a graduation requirement (fine art, health, etc.). Students may use an ELO as a fifth class (for eligibility purposes) only with permission from the administration.

An ELO is different from the independent study options offered at Yarmouth High School because it allows students to work with experts in the topic of choice outside of school or gain work experience while standard independent studies require an in-school expert to work with the student full time. Students must complete research and reflections, create a final product (project based learning) and present their learning to a team of school staff. Students may complete no more than three ELOs for a maximum of 1.5 elective credits. Students will not be graded for their work; upon successful completion of an ELO the student's transcript will indicate a Pass.
