Purpose
To understand and demonstrate how to make a good movie poster;
To visually capture people’s attention through a movie poster;
To understand how designers create suspense and a particular mood in a poster design.
Designers can do lots of different things to evoke certain moods in a poster. In my first poster, titled "Walk the Plank", I stretched the perspective to make the captain's hat seem larger and more in focus. I also purposefully left the scene vague as to create a sense of unease. The blue nighttime colors also make the poster seem more mysterious. In my second design, "Go Fish", I decided to make the sailor and the dinghy tiny to make the giant angler fish terrifying and ominous. I also left the sea relatively empty to make the viewer feel isolated, and there is no sense of help for the sailor.
The object that I was assigned was a fish. In my first poster the fish represents the logo of a cruise ship. The boat's captain is murdered by someone on board and the only evidence left behind is his hat with the fish logo. The poster was meant to draw on famous murder-mystery stories of the past by isolating the characters in one setting. My second poster uses the word "fish" more directly. "Go Fish" is a horror movie about a giant fish. That fish, more specifically an angler fish, is depicted on the front of the poster as a menace to the lonely sailor on the dinghy.
